You would think by entering the Sierra section, we had left at least some of the heat behind. But that is definitely not the case today, and wasn’t the case yesterday when I arrived at Kennedy Meadows. It’s very warm, some would say hot.
I have to say that Kennedy Meadows isn’t my favorite place to take a zero. It’s kind of a strange, interesting place. It’s both a little of what I expected and a little of what I didn’t. I thought they would have a better selection of food for hikers, but it was somewhat limited. The facilities, also, are pretty limited and rustic. However they do have a café with decent food and the prices for most things here are pretty reasonable, which isn’t always the case in places along the trail. They also don’t charge for camping there.
About 2.5 miles down the road there is another place called Grumpy Bears Retreat. It’s more of a bar/restaurant, and they also let people camp there. However, everyone that works there lives up to the name, grumpy. But on the good side the food is pretty decent and they did have some bananas.
Right next-door to Grumpy‘s is a small store in a trailer catering to PCT hikers called Triple Crown Outfitters. It’s run by a well-known and very experienced hiker named Yogi. There were some rumors that she was unfriendly, however when I was there she was extremely helpful and nice to everyone. Also for being in a trailer, she had an excellent supply of items; you could do an entire resupply from this store if you had to. So, overall Triple Crown Outfitters was my favorite place in Kennedy Meadows.
